These photographs from California, Idaho, and Oregon focus upon the basic elements of process, describing a connection to history that is both geological and photographic. The 19th century collodion technique I have used to make these images builds a certain conceptual connection to the topography of the American west, by inviting the serendipitous nature of the wet-plate process to create the mood and portray the sense that both are formed by a well-organized improvisation.
